How can we inspire a change of culture that can help bring attitudes towards women and gender equality into the 21st century? Join us as we discuss how men, women, businesses, organisations and those who find themselves in positions of power can help enable change by highlighting how we break damaging behavioural habits and take steps to alter negative attitudes towards women.
Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams studied graphic design and illustration at Central St Martins and quickly gained critical acclaim as Creative Director of Beyond the Valley for 8 years. In 2011, Kristjana S Williams began creating fine art pieces, art prints, furniture and more. Williams’s inspiration lies heavily with layering nature upon nature and ‘the symmetry in all things living’, which stems from the artist’s childhood in Iceland.
Kristjana has designed a bespoke piece of artwork, displayed on the HeForShe T-Shirt.

PLAYING CARDS WITH MY GRANDMOTHER
“I played cards with my Grandmother all the time when I was growing up (she lived next door). It was about being together without the need for conversation but with space for it if we wanted. Games remind us of what we have in common, and the cards are an attempt to realise and recapture some of the essence of what my grandmothers offered through images and messages; advice, wisdom, experience, reassurance, love, patience, stoicism, continuity and comfort. I loved my grandmother’s house because it was calm, time moved slower, things were always the same. The cards themselves were also therapeutic, the motifs magical, ambiguous, enigmatic.”

KRISTJANA S WILLIAMS
ARTIST
Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams studied graphic design and illustration at Central St Martins and quickly gained critical acclaim as Creative Director of Beyond the Valley for 8 years. In 2011, Kristjana S Williams began creating fine art pieces, art prints, furniture and more. Williams’s inspiration lies heavily with layering nature upon nature and ‘the symmetry in all things living’, which stems from the artist’s childhood in Iceland.
Kristjana S Williams designed this print especially for HeForShe Arts Week reimagining existing narratives to emphasise the role of women in tales. Through a variety of symbols and visual attributes each emphasising female power, the artwork aims to envisage a world of harmony, not only between the different genders but bringing the Earth itself into the picture with its seas and different creatures. In the centre of the piece, the modified statue of Pallas Athene represents the importance of women, female identity, power and equality, echoing the essence of the HeForShe movement. The sensitive disposition of the subject required great care in selecting the elements that were going to be incorporated into the image.
Working with ancient Greek statues helped to add a timeless feel to the composition and hopefully to create a visual language that people can easily connect with regardless of race, sexuality or other factors of identity formation. The positive atmosphere of the campaign suggested a playful approach to the creation of the artwork, its tropical and colourful elements compliment the spirit of the HeForShe Campaign. The composition features a number of symbols such as leopards (peace), dolphins (joy, diligence, love, charity), orchids (perfection), laurel leaves (eternity, victory), palm leaves (prosperity, beauty) among others.
